Medical Coders have overall responsibility to perform items 9 through 15 under Task 2A of the OWCP contract:
9. Plans, designs and implements assignments, projects, and/or studies in the areas of medical coding. Utilizes current medical and scientific knowledge available in reference manuals, books and other documents on how they clinically and administratively apply to the OWCP Central Bill Processing (CBP) processes.
10. Plans and develops methods for the assessment of the CBP Treatment Suites (OWCP business rules linking diagnosis to medical procedures) and, as needed, implements improvements based on the analysis of internal OWCP data and examination of outside trends in the workers’ compensation field.
11. Develops training materials for staff as necessary.
12. Determines new techniques and advancements to ensure the accurate application of medical coding on the processing of medical bills
13. Provides technical assistance and training to health care providers regarding billing and coding requirements. Answers inquiries about the medical bill processing system.
14. Monitors the utilization of medical services to identify over-utilization patterns. Produces reports with recommendations to curb this practice.
15. Participates in OWCP projects related to containment of medical costs.
Position Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED.
· Strong administrative and communication skills.
· The ability to deal tactfully, confidentially, and professionally with all levels of staff.
· Must be a certified Professional coder (CPC) from either the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
· Must have either 5 years general CPC experience or (preferred) 2 years specifically with a medical insurance company or other payor.
